"Mama Bird" May Be Grounded
Evelyn Bryan Johnson, recognized by Guiness as the female pilot with the most logged flight time (over seven years in the air), was involved in a car crash on the way to the airport the morning of September 10, 2006. The gist of the full story is she was traveling with the sun in her eyes and rear-ended a slow moving tractor. Her legs were crushed as her car wedged itself under the farm equipment and doctors had to amputate one of her legs.
We often erroneously comment on the drive to/from the airport as being the most dangerous part of the flight but, sadly, this turned out to be true for "Mama Bird" Johnson this day. I can only hope to reach a couple years from a century of age. To be flying at that age would be a true privilege. To have had the impact on aviation this lady has had would be damned near impossible.
Here's good wishes and hopes for a (relatively) speedy recovery and return to the air.
