IFR Proficiency Flight

I've been flying a good bit in the past month (the more recent one being to Trenton, NJ (KTTN), for example), but haven't posted due to...well, just haven't had anything substantial to show or tell. Even this flight isn't anything special, but I did capture my first video using my new camera mount. Check out the mount.

This flight was an IFR currency/proficiency flight. Winds were a bit gusty (330@7G16 at takeoff from KJYO) so it made for a good IFR practice day. It definitely knocked off the rust.

First up was the ILS 32 into Winchester, VA (KOKV). Despite the gusts, I think I did a fair job of holding the glideslope and localizer. We then flew down to Culpeper, VA (KCJR) for the VOR approach. This one showed some of my rust and I knew I'd be flying it again before we left.

After the botched VOR, I flew outbound for the LOC 4 approach back into KCJR. This of course required a course reversal and I decided to add another holding pattern to the mix. I definitely began to feel more comfortable with procedures after that and my LOC approach was acceptable even though still not where I was six months ago. I broke off the LOC approach and flew out to the Casanova VOR (CSN) for another shot at the VOR approach. This one was more respectable even if my groundspeed was still quite high (remember the tailwind). We then turned for home and flew the GPS 17 back into KJYO.

The video demonstrates activation of a VFR DC ADIZ flight plan and initial contact with Potomac Consolidated TRACON (PCT).
