Spring Break '07 - Part 5: 65J-KGSO
After a nice resting visit with my folks in Wrens, it was time to pack up the dog and family for the flight back to Leesburg. This leg would take us to Greensboro, NC (KGSO) for a bio/fuel stop.
There were two things of note on this trip. First is the "new" route I tried around Charlotte, NC (KCLT). The winds were rather high for this flight and I didn't want to risk getting dropped low (as seems to be the case more often than not around KCLT) where I'd have to deal with turbulence. It was smooth at 11,000 feet and I wanted to stay there, so I planned my route to the East side of KCLT's airspace this time. It worked. I was able to stay at 11K and it didn't add much time to my flight - especially considering the winds.
Landing at KGSO was interesting, though. Surface winds along my route this day were forecast to be gusting pretty high, but the gusts weren't expected to pick up until after my arrival at KGSO. Unfortunately, Mother Nature doesn't seem to watch the Weather Channel for scheduling information. Winds were 240@11G15. Not much of a gust, I'll grant you, but it was a harbinger of things to come. While waiting for fuel, we watched a FedEx DC10 execute a go-around after descending to flare height. Things were changing in the relatively short time we were on the ground.
The video shows takeoff from 65J and landing at KGSO.
