PIREP: Sony PRS-505 With ReaderPlates

I got a Sony PRS-505 for Christmas this year and couldn't wait to try it out in the plane with ReaderPlates. Here are my thoughts...

081201 Descending Through Clouds (Thanksgiving '08 - 16 of 17)

After confirming with FlightWatch the PIREPs of icing from planes going into Charlottesville, VA (KCHO) and getting ground temps of well above freezing, I opted to get under the clouds - and quickly.

081130 Landing 65J (Thanksgiving '08 - 15 of 17)

After waiting out a fast-moving weather front in Jacksonville, FL (KCRG), we finally arrived at our destination, Wrens, GA (65J). Nearby automated weather reports showed a zero-degree dewpoint spread, so fast forming fog was a concern, but none appeared.

081130 Departing KCRG (Thanksgiving '08 - 14 of 17)

The weather front that prompted my diversion to Jacksonville/Craig Municipal (KCRG) had moved out of my line of flight after about an hour's wait. This is my night departure from KCRG over the St. Johns River and downtown Jacksonville.

081130 Landing KCRG (Thanksgiving '08 - 13 of 17)

ATC advised us of "moderate to severe turbulence reported from everything up to a Boeing 767" at all altitudes my little Skylane is capable of reaching. I felt discretion was advised so I coordinated with ATC a diversion to Jacksonville/Craig Municipal (KCRG).

081130 Departing KSFB (Thanksgiving '08 - 12 of 17)

IFR departure into high IMC. What was remarkable about this departure is how eerily quiet the frequencies were at Sanford (KSFB) . I've been there a few times now and never been the only operation on or near the field. (Delta Connection Academy has

081130 Landing KSFB (Thanksgiving '08 - 11 of 17)

Approach and landing at Sanford, FL (KSFB). No audio this time due to technical difficulty. (OK, the teenager inadvertently kicked out the audio cable.) Strong crosswind on landing made this one interesting.

081130 Departing 65J (Thanksgiving '08 - 10 of 17)

Departing Wrens, GA (65J) enroute to Sanford, FL (KSFB). Low ceilings over 65J...

081125 Departing KSFB (Thanksgiving '08 - 8 of 17)

This is our departure from Sanford, FL (KSFB) returning with the college kid to spend Thanksgiving with family.

081125 Landing KSFB (Thanksgiving '08 - 7 of 17)

Here's my landing at Sanford, FL (KSFB). Typical ILS approach in IMC - but I did have to fly this one with an inoperative directional gyro/heading indicator. That was interesting in the clouds.

081125 Busy Orlando Controller (Thanksgiving '08 - 6 of 17)

It's not unusual to hear a busy controller, but this Orlando controller was jumping. Here's 10 minutes of his shift.

081125 Departing 65J (Thanksgiving '08 - 5 of 17)

This is our departure from Wrens, GA (65J) to fly to Sanford, FL (KSFB). This is a VFR departure to pick up my IFR clearance in the air.

081122 KHQU-65J (Thanksgiving '08 - 4 of 17)

This is a compilation of the short hop from Thomson, GA (KQHU) to Wrens, GA (65J).

081122 Landing KHQU (Thanksgiving '08 - 3 of 17)

This is nearing our destination for our Thanksgiving 2008 trip to visit family in GA. Since our final destination, Wrens, GA (65J), does not have fuel, we routinely land at Thomson, GA (KHQU) to re-fuel.

081122 Departing KTDF (Thanksgiving '08 - 2 of 17)

After a short bio break, we were ready to complete our journey to 65J. This is my VFR departure from KTDF with an airborne IFR activation.

081122 Landing KTDF (Thanksgiving '08 - 1 of 17)

We had to divert to Roxboro, NC for a bio break during our trip from Leesburg, VA (KJYO) to Wrens, GA (65J). This is the approach and landing to KTDF after getting ATC to clear our diversion.

Taking the Instrument Rating Checkride

I've had a few folks ask me for advice on taking the instrument rating checkride. There are plenty of resources on what to study, which designated pilot examiner (DPE) to use, and other "how to prep" suggestions. They are generally pretty good considering they have to be pretty general considering those providing the advice rarely have enough insight to give truly valuable advice to the asker. However, the below experience worked well enough for me...
