090611 Landing KZEF
This is my approach and landing to Elkin, NC (KZEF) to pick up my brother on the way to Georgia. On the descent we get to hear two interesting transactions.
The first is a Lear jet on the ground at Statesville, NC (KSVH) calling Atlanta Center to get their IFR release. This is a lesson in clarity of speech. Mumbling on the radio is not a good way to get the attention of a controller.
The second is N25WD who requests a deviation for weather and a diversion to "someplace other than Nashville, I think I need a break." The controller understands this to be a request to deviate to Asheville, NC (KAVL). What wasn't clear to me was whether Asheville was where the pilot really wanted to go. Regardless of why you request a diversion (bio? weather?), the point is to be clear in your request. Know the airport you want to divert to before contacting ATC. Don't expect them to pick your new destination "within 20-30 mins" of your location.
