090626 GPS 23 KMQI

Flight track: KJYO-KMQIThis is my approach and landing to Manteo, NC (KMQI) for a weekend at the beach. The weather was forecast for the typical scattered afternoon thundershower. As we neared Elizabeth City, NC (KECG), Washington Center (ZDC) asked me to let him know when I had the weather at KMQI and what approach I wanted. Hmm... OK, so I had to wait just a bit to get in range of the AWOS then: 200@16G23 10 -RA 27/20 A2971.

I elected for the GPS 23 approach and was soon cleared to HELTH (the initial approach fix for the approach). As I neared the coast I heard the controller announce a new convective SIGMET for "well, the entire East Coast particularly southeastern Virginia where storms are expected to generate hail up to 2 inches."

OK, diversion options may be limited.

As I lined up on final I noticed one of those storms southwest of my destination. The controller gave me cancellation instructions and I told him I'd be cancelling on the ground (in case the storm moved in faster than expected or I had to go missed for any other reason).

The landing was uneventful and I called ZDC immediately after clearing the runway to cancel IFR (the frequency works from the ground at Manteo).

No radio audio on this one.
