  • FBI Asks For Help ID'ing Legendary D.B. Cooper

The FBI has release an updated sketch they believe is closer to what the famous hijacker really looked like as well as laying out for the public for the first time much of the evidence they've uncovered over the years in the hopes you (certainly not me) can help them identify who the culprit was. They were able to recover a DNA sample from a ...

  • DC ADIZ Changes Coming Soon

Well, the rumors have been confirmed: The ADIZ will be changing as of August 30, 2007. Here's what AOPA had to say about it today:Dear AOPA Member:  Over the past four years, pilots like you and I flying in the Baltimore-Washington area have struggled with the effects of the Washington, D.C., Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). For ...

  • Plane on a Treadmill

OK, so it may not be as exciting as Snakes On A Plane, but here's the problem statement:An airplane is positioned on a giant treadmill as long as a runway. The treadmill moves in the opposite direction and same speed as the airplane. Will the plane takeoff?I can forgive the general public for not getting the correct answer. I just ...

  • Kiwi Takes Flight

The desire for flight can be overwhelming for some. For proof, take a look at this short video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdUUx5FdySs

  • What Happened to the Videos? MP4 is Back.

I was finally able to convince my hosting provider to add the MP4 MIME type to Internet Information Server.  Of course, it took them nearly a week from the time they agreed to do it until they executed their promise, but at least I can post MP4's again. The old ones are back and I'm rendering a few new ones as we speak.

  • What Happened to the Videos?

Short version: The server I'm now using to host my blog does not recognize ''mp4'' as a valid MIME type and the hosting company is not willing to add it to the list. So, it was then a choice between using a format most people would still be able to use (even if it's not an open standard) or find another host. Frankly, the only real choice there ...

  • "Stamp Run" Defined

I've been asked ''what is a 'stamp run'?''  Well, here's the long version... The Virginia Department of Aviation put together a program called the Virginia Aviation Ambassadors Program. The idea is to go to your local Virginia airport and pick up a ''passport'' (it's even US State Department blue with gold lettering) that has blocks for all ...

  • Sporty's Chart Viewer and Adobe Reader 7

I've been using Sporty's Chart Viewer for a good while now (and highly recommend it for easy currency of approach plates).  However, I ran into a problem with it after upgrading Adobe Reader to version 7: Chart Viewer stopped working with an error message: ''Failed to load control 'Pdf' from pdf.ocx.  Your version of pf.ocx may be ...

  • Miscellaneous Videos

These are various videos that I've collected and found interesting. 405 The Movie - Wrong place, wrong time to be driving the venerable Jeep Grand Cherokee. A US Navy F-14 Tomcat breaks the sound barrier as it passes a ship. A Korean Air Lines Boeing 747 lands at Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong. O'Hare controllers deal with a plane in distress. ...
